Removing barriers to justice
In South Africa, it's crucial to remove barriers to access legal services in order to ensure that everyone has equal access to justice — it is a fundamental human right stipulated in the South African Constitution and is essential for a fair and just society. There are many reasons why so many South Africans are not able to access legal services, including lack of legal education, socio-economic disparities, isolated living conditions, and overcrowded courts. Our tool aims to address some of these challenges by making it easier for citizens to find and access the legal assistance they need.
Developing the Evictions guide has taught us how navigating the legal system can be a daunting task, especially for those already dealing with difficult situations. That's why we've created a mapping tool that helps users find the legal resources closest to them, and a database of free legal resources that can scroll through to find the service that best fits their needs.
Our tool is designed to break down barriers and make legal assistance more accessible for everyone. It's easy to use and available online, completely free of charge. Whether you're on a computer, tablet, or smartphone, you can access our tool from anywhere with internet access.
The free legal contacts repository includes information on the location as well as the contact details of each legal service provider in our database. Users can search for contact details by organisation name, filter their search results by type of organisation, Province, or even search for organisations closest to them.
"Our goal with this new feature is to make it easier for citizens to find and access the all the legal assistance they need, in a way that works best for them"
Explained Shaun Russell, the Evictions Project visionary and Product Owner.
